Joseph Nalley, Director
Joseph Nalley joins the Bay Winds band with extensive experience leading local Community Bands. Since arriving in Maryland in 2012, Joe has dedicated his recent musical efforts to helping our area’s adult musicians discover, master, and perform significant repertoire. As a guiding philosophy, Joe believes the band experience is about more than “just” playing the music on the stand. Understanding what makes each piece of music special while developing the ability to anticipate the musical needs of the music and the ensemble are two skills that Joe tries to nurture with his direction.
Joe’s musical training includes a Music Theory degree from the University of Notre Dame and experience as a high school band director in Louisville, KY. As a college musician, he performed on clarinet with the Notre Dame Symphony Orchestra and in multiple concert bands (Principal), along with the Marching Band of the Fighting Irish. He filled his summers with marching band clinician work and music camp teaching. In graduate school, Joe continued with his orchestral playing while earning a Masters in Architecture.
In addition to Bay Winds, Joe currently plays with the Bel Air Community Band (Asst. Director), the Chesapeake Concert Band (Director), Category 5 Wind Ensemble (Clarinet), and Maryland All State Band (Alto Saxophone). On the occasional evening Joe finds himself at home, he and his wife revel in the joys of two kids under five, a 15 year-old dog, and lots of grass and leaves to keep in line.
